At first there were two guys, and then two more – and
hey… then there’s a real band. Four guys bound by there
indefatigable appreciation for Thrash metal. Initially
they just unpretentiously wanted to copy, and play a
bunch of head-banging songs by their favorite artists
- and did so for nearly ten years. By now the band were
killer musicians, albeit it with a strange line-up,
comprising of three guitarists, two drummers, a bass
player and a lead-singer. Time flies when you’re having
fun, and in the meantime the calendar reads 1998, and
they release their debut recording effort: TARTALO.
In 1999 the line-up normalizes, and stabilizes. EKAITZ
(lead-guitar), XANTI (bass and lead vocals), JOSEBA
(rhythm guitar) and EDORTA (drums) are now LEGEN BELTZA,
and they release ZIZTU BIZIAN, a mixture of Power- and
Thrash Metal. And if you’re wondering where all these
wonderfully eccentric names and titles come from, we’ll
now finally divulge that LEGEN BELTZA hail from the
Basque Country, in the North of Spain.
Gradually LEGEN BELTZA reinvent themselves from a band
playing for audiences of near zero attendants to opening
act for the big guns like IRON MAIDEN, EXODUS, NAPALM
DEATH, and SLAYER. In 2001 LEGEN BELTZA recorded and
released their first full-length album, ISTORIO TRISTE
BAT (if you know what it means – tell us! – ha ha),
on a local label called IZ-ROCK, which unfortunately
folded soon after. Also the time had come for a minor
line-up tune-up, and AZKUE replaced JOSEBA on rhythm
guitar, the latter also introducing a few Death-Metal
influences into the mix. By 2003 LEGEN BELTZA had INSANITY
in the can, a powerful follow-up album that combined
old-skool Thrash-Metal with aggressive in-your-face
vocals. INSANITY, which was mixed by JEFF WATERS (ANNIHILATOR)
benefited from a worldwide release on the American CRASH
label. In 2005, in Spain only, they released TOTAL INSANITY,
which was a package containing the INSANITY album bundled
with ISTORIO TRISTE BAT, and live version of the INSANITY
album. They followed with a live DVD, and a very successful
performance at the FESTAS FESTIMAD and LORCA ROCK festivals.
Next, in 2006, comes another album, and yet another
record label. LEGEN BELTZA justified the divorce from
CRASH by pointing out that their label was great in
America, but didn’t have much of a presence in Europe.
They contacted MAUSOLEUM RECORDS who had been looking
to sign a Spanish act for a while, and were thrilled
at the prospect of welcoming a great Thrash-oriented
band to the roster, and releasing the new album: DIMENSION
OF PAIN. With DIMENSION OF PAIN they strike hard, very
hard. Furious Thrash-based-Metal played in their very
personal and inimitable LEGEN BELTZA style. The epic
closing track, WARS OF WARS, features a number of prestigious
guest musicians and vocalist, among which you’ll recognize
members of RAGE, IMAGIKA, ARCH ENEMY, CALLENISH CIRCLE,
NOSTRADAMEUS and CARDINAL SIN. Let the pain begin!
